IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME (2021) C1/C2 LEVELS

A different type of lesson about Christmas and Christmas related vocabulary. I hope you find it useful.

IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME

Try to answer the following questions with your group mates.

1.   What happens if Christmas comes early?

2.   What is a ‘white elephant’?

3.   When would turkeys be voting for Christmas?

4.   Who is secret Santa?

What is an idiom?

An idiom is a phrase whose meaning cannot be inferred by the literal translation of the individual group of words. For example, 'it's raining cats and dogs' means that it is raining heavily, not that domestic pets are falling from the sky.

Answers

 UNDER THE MISTLETOE

Fill in the gaps with the missing phrases.

[Stanza 1]

It's the most beautiful time of the year

Lights fill the streets, spreading so much cheer

I should be playing in the winter snow

But I'mma be under the mistletoe

I don't wanna miss out on the holiday

But I can't stop staring at your face

I should be playing in the winter snow

But I'mma be under the mistletoe

[Chorus]

(With you) Shawty, with you

(With you) Shawty, with you

(With you) Under the mistletoe

[Stanza 2]

Everyone's gathering around the fire

Chestnuts roasting like a hot July

But I'mma be under the mistletoe

Word on the street, Santa's coming tonight

Reindeer's flying through the sky so high

I should be making a list, I know

But I'mma be under the mistletoe

[Chorus]

[Bridge]

Ayy love, the wise men followed the star

The way I followed my heart

And it led me to a miracle

Ayy love, don't you buy me nothing

'Cause I am feeling one thing, your lips on my lips

That's a merry, merry Christmas

THE POGUES: FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

SONG (fill in the gaps) C1

A British friend of mine has shared this video with me today and as I was watching it I just thought it would make a great listening comprehension activity for my C1 students.

There are plenty of expressions and vocabulary from everyday English and some verb tenses to review.

A big shout to The Marsh Family for the hard work they do and the inspiration they are to many people.

Third lockdown

2021 and it’s 1…………….,

No one’s ever coming round

Third lockdown

But I’m still listening to 2………..

Third lockdown

Every day I’m treated like 3…………,

But they mess it 4…………..

Third lockdown

5………. we get a little bit terrified

Of when we think she’s gonna let fly

Third lockdown – time flies

Struggling to 6………

Third lockdown – time flies

7…………

But we’ve grown a lot in height

There’s no way for us to measure

And if you look 8……….

We’ve been eating 9……..

All these screens must be 10……..

‘cause we’re on 11…….

Together we once limited the hours 12……

Now someone’s got the Xbox One on 13……..

I don’t know what to do

We work 14…… and …....

We’re sitting in pyjamas making 15….. remarks

We’re really feeling uptight

My bedroom’s 16………. (x2)

Once upon a time, we could travel 17……

Now we barely get in the car

There’s nothing we can do

We’re totally fixed where we are

Once upon a time, 18……….

But now we can’t be arsed with park

Nothing we can say

We’re totally fixed where we are

Used to be “Bright Eyes”

Struggling to tell the days apart

Now “Lord of the Flies”

Feels as if we’re right back at the start

And we 19……..

I don’t close the doors in winter

Dad said use ONLY black and white

We’ve been 20…….

And we’ll always be picking a fight

‘cause they’ll never be “wrong”!

Together 21……..   all our parents’ red lines

We’re physically older but in MENTAL DECLINE

We won’t go back to school

22…………

Just sitting in our 23……………….. and giving off farts!

We’re really feeling irate

Like bears, that never 24……..

Forever in a lockdown state

Once upon a time, we were singing Les Mis

Now it's only is 80s songs from the charts

Nothing we can say

we are totally fixed where we are (x3)

FULL SONG

 Third lockdown

2021 and it’s a little bit lonely,

No one’s ever coming round

Third lockdown

But I’m still listening to the sound of their tears

Third lockdown

Every day I’m treated like I offer room service,

But they mess it in the blink of an eye

Third lockdown

Every now and then we get a little bit terrified

Of when we think she’s gonna let fly

Third lockdown – time flies

Struggling to tell the days apart

Third lockdown – time flies

Feels as if we’re only at the start

But we’ve grown a lot in height

There’s no way for us to measure

And if you look our clothes are tight

We’ve been eating more than ever

All these screens must be harming our sight

‘cause we’re on all day long

Together we once limited the hours online

Now someone’s got the Xbox One on all of the time

I don’t know what to do

We work in fits and starts

We’re sitting in pyjamas making catty remarks

We’re really feeling uptight

My bedroom’s like a building site (x2)

Once upon a time, we could travel abroad

Now we barely get in the car

There’s nothing we can do

We’re totally fixed where we are

Once upon a time, we went hiking for miles

But now we can’t be arsed with park

Nothing we can say

We’re totally fixed where we are

Used to be “Bright Eyes”

Struggling to tell the days apart

Now “Lord of the Flies”

Feels as if we’re right back at the start

And we leave on all the lights

I don’t close the doors in winter

Dad said use ONLY black and white

We’ve been ruining the printer

And we’ll always be picking a fight

‘cause they’ll never be “wrong”!

Together we have flouted all our parents’ red lines

We’re physically older but in MENTAL DECLINE

We won’t go back to school

Until the eighth of March

Just sitting in our dressing gowns and giving off farts!

We’re really feeling irate

Like bears, that never hibernate

Forever in a lockdown state

Once upon a time, we were singing Les Mis

Now it's only is 80 songs from the charts

Nothing we can say

we are totally fixed where we are (x3)

CULTURAL NOTES: WHAT IS CANDLEMAS DAY?

 2ND FEBRUARY 2021

When I asked my students what 'The Candelarias' was, they could not explain, basically because they didn't know, so I decided to find out by myself and, in return, teach them a lesson (LOL) for not being able to answer a simple question about something related to their culture.

I have prepared this Cloze test for them to hopefully teach them a little about their traditions, which btw, are not my own.
