SEMANA SANTA 2020 EN CONFINAMIENTO

RESISTIRÉ

EASTER 2020 UNDER LOCKDOWN

I WILL HOLD ON

Three of my workmates at the Official Language School of Palencia, Ana Sanz,  Marta Vicente, Paula Fuertes and myself, decided to adapt the lyrics of a very popular song "Resisteré" to the new context in which we have been forced to teach because of the exceptional circumstances taking place in our country.

This everlasting song written by Carlos Toro in the 1980s and sung by the internationally famous "Dúo Dinámico" made up of Manuel de la Calva and Ramón Arcusa is now played on the radio, TV and the internet several times a day because of its lyrics, which are really encouraging and inspiring, especially in these hard times.

I hope you´ll enjoy it as much as we do every time we watch ourselves.

Sister Sledge
Students have to spot the words that do not correspond to the actual lyrics and write the correct one.
Sister Sledge
 We are family
I got all my siblings with me
We are family
Stand up everybody, sing
We are family
Stand up everybody, sing

Everyone can notice we’re together
As we go on by
And we flock just like birds of a feather
I won’t tell no lie
All of the people surrounding us they say
‘Can they be that close?
Just let me say for the record
We’re giving love in a family dose

We are family
I got all my siblings with me
We are family
Stand up everybody, sing
We are family
Stand up everybody, sing

Living life is amusing and we’ve just begun
To get our portion of this world’s delights
Great hopes we have for the future
And our aim’s in sight
No we don’t get disappointed
Here’s what we call our golden rule
Be self-confident and the things you do
You won’t go wrong, oh no
This is our family precious stone

ANSWER
We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family
Get up everybody and sing (X2)
Everyone can see we're together
As we walk on by
(And) and we fly just like birds of a feather
I won't tell no lie
all of the people around us they say
Can they be that close
Just let me state for the record
We're giving love in a family dose
(CHORUS)
Living life is fun and we've just begun
To get our share of this world's delights
(High) high hopes we have for the future
And our goal's in sight
no, we don't get depressed
Here's what we call our golden rule
Have faith in you and the things you do
You won't go wrong, oh no
This is our family jewel
We are family (hey, sing it to me)
(CHORUS)

THE -ING IN PROGRESSIVE VERB TENSES

This is my favourite song to practise and/or revise the structure and formation of progressive tenses at any level from A1 - B2. It is quite simple to understand for all levels and fun too, especially if you play the animation video. It is also a good song to mime the actions mentioned in the lyrics.
This is a higher level listening comprehension than the one below since students have to answer to open questions and write the answer as they listen. It is convenient to give them some extra time to complete the answers once they have listened to the song or you can always stop the song after each question if they find too hard.

LEMON TREE

FOOLS GARDEN

Listen to the song and answer the following questionS
1. Where is he sitting?
2. What’s the weather like?
3. What day of the week is it?
4. Does he have anything to do?
5. Why is he hanging around?
6. What’s he doing in his car?
7. Is he going slowly?
8. Is he going nearby?
9. What would he like to do?
10. How does he feel?
11. What did she tell him about yesterday?
12. What can he see?
13. Why is he taking a shower?
14. What’s inside his head?
15. Why does he go to bed?
16. What isn't good for him?

LEMON TREE

FOOLS GARDEN

I'm ............... here in a boring room
It's just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I'm .................... my time, I got nothing to do
I'm ................. around, I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens -- and I wonder
I'm ...........I'm ............ too fast, I'm ........... too far
I'd like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely, I'm ................... for you
But nothing ever happens, and I wonder

(Chorus)

I wonder how, I wonder why
Yesterday you .............. me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
I'm ................. my head up and down
I'm ........., ........., ............, ........., ......... around
And all that I can see is just another yellow
lemon tree
sing! La, la da dee da,...
I'm .................... here, I miss the power
I'd like to go out ................... a shower
But there's a heavy cloud inside my head

I feel so tired, put myself into bed
Where nothing ever happens -- and I wonder
Isolation is not good for me
Isolation -- I don't want to sit on a lemon tree
I'm ..................... around in a desert of joy
Baby anyhow I'll get another toy
And everything will happen -- and you'll wonder

     B2.1 LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Fill in the Gaps

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Students first read the song in pairs and then listen to it once. They fill in as many gaps as they can. They check with their partners and listen to it again. As usual when we listen to a song, we sing it in small groups and as a class.

Identify the Wrong Words

MOLLY MALONE

I prepared this song to get my students ready for Quiz Night on Saint Patrick's Day, 17th March, 2020. Unfortunately, it could never be practised or sung. I hope we will all be able to sing it soon evern though not when it should have been done.

The students listen to the song once, identify and underline the words that do not correspond to the actual words. They ckeck with their partners and listen again. This time they write down the right words and check with their partners.

Students in groups of four work out the meaning of new words.Of course, they sing the song, once or twice. 🔊

Unscramble the Christmas Words

ROCKIN' AROUND THE XMAS TREE

This song is perfect for learning some Christmas vocabulary. Students have to work out what the scrambled word is. They have some visual aid from the drawings on the side.

Fill in the Gaps

"9 TO 5"

"9 to 5" is my own tribute to those students who have a 9 to ? job and a family to take care of,  but still manage to get some free time to come to my  English lessons in the evening with a smile on their face.
I have to different strategies and levels for the same song. The fill in the gaps version, which can also be a bit challenging for some students, was originally intended for B2.1 and for some B2.2 students with a lower level. However, the higher version, which is a listening comprehension with open questions, designed entirely for B2.2 ended up being a little too difficult for them. So what I decided to play the song and stop after each question so that the only focused on that part of the song. That also gave them extra time to write the answers. Once we have checked the answers, I gave them a few minutes to look at the vocabulary with their partners.
Finally, I got some feedback from them and also made sure they had understood a couple of idiomatic expressions in the song that I found relevant for them to learn. You can also give them a paper sheet with the lyrics.
They all loved this song and felt identified with it.

Fill in the Gaps

DANCE MONKEY

I know, you are right! This is not a very didactic song but having been top of the charts in over 30 countries, including Spain, for weeks and weeks I could not say 'no' to my young students. Besides that, isn't it a bit daring to rule a song out just because it may not say much?

How can we use this song in our lessons?
Well, in my case I prepared a fill in the gaps activity with two different levels of complexity, one for my B2.1 students and the other for the B2.2 group. They both found them very difficult because of the accent.  This gave me the chance to tell them about some cultural and linguistic aspects of Australia. Further to that, we watched part of the video and described the story. I also suggested some critical thinking: How do you see the elderly? Is there life after retirement? What can society do to improve their living conditions?
