2. Newsela
Newsela is an instructional content platform with plenty of update authentic content from articles to quizzes based on topics of interest which can be downloaded or assigned to students online.
However, from my point of the view, the most outstanding feature of Newsela is that all the articles are differentiated , i.e. content is adapted to different levels of language knowledge as regards the lexicon and the number of words in the texts. So, if you like to plan your reading strategies paying attention to differentiation, this is your platform. And best of all, they are now offering free access to all their contents until the end of 2020. 😃
In the example below the students had to key in professions. The size of the word is related to the number of times the word was submitted by the group.
3. Learning English VOA
It is a multimedia source of news and information for both teachers and learners of English.
It is ideal for learning English while listening, reading and answering comprehension questions. It is free and you don't need to sign up to have access to their activities.
Everybody loves mentimeter. It is an interactive presentation which enables students to be active and part of the lesson while they create word clouds, sentences, graphs, ...
In the activity below, students in pairs had to submit a sentence using the present perfect simple or continuous. One of the great things of this interactive app is that the sentences are anonymous therefore students do not feel embarrassed about their mistakes when the sentences are displayed on the board. The whole class proofreads the sentences and corrects mistakes.
2. Freerice
Freerice is an online game that donates grains of rice to the World Food Programme for every word or question that is correctly answered. It is free and students really enjoy it.
