Why tough times can create better neighbours

The coronavirus has changed everyday life. For many people, it limits the contact they have with others. Still, they have found ways to reach out.

In a neighbourhood in Boston, Massachusetts, people came from their apartments for a flash mob on March 14. The neighbours waved to each other and joined in singing the Beatles song "Let it Be." In Italy, people on lockdown lean out of windows and balconies to sing. On March 14, people in Spain began clapping together to cheer health care workers.

As the practice of "social distancing" grows, people are finding ways to meet even though they can't meet face-to-face. They're using video calling and social network connections. However, people aren't just staying in touch with friends and family. The global problem is causing people to reach out to their communities. In the middle of the outbreak, there is kindness among strangers.

"In times of great stress, helping others is a powerful way to maintain control in a moment where many of us feel helpless," said Jamil Zaki. He wrote the book, "The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World." "Kindness toward others actually can be a great source of healing."

VIDEO: RESISTIRÉ

SEMANA SANTA 2020 EN CONFINAMIENTO

RESISTIRÉ

EASTER 2020 UNDER LOCKDOWN

I WILL HOLD ON

Three of my workmates at the Official Language School of Palencia, Ana Sanz,  Marta Vicente, Paula Fuertes and myself, decided to adapt the lyrics of a very popular song "Resisteré" to the new context in which we have been forced to teach because of the exceptional circumstances taking place in our country.

This everlasting song written by Carlos Toro (thank you ever so much!) in the 1980s and sung by the internationally famous "Dúo Dinámico" made up of Manuel de la Calva and Ramón Arcusa is now played on the radio, TV and the internet several times a day because of its lyrics, which are really encouraging and inspiring, especially in these hard times.

I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do every time we watch it and listen to ourselves.

SONG: WE ARE FAMILY - SISTER SLEDGE

WE ARE FAMILY

Sister Sledge

Students have to spot the words that do not correspond to the actual lyrics and write the correct one.

WE ARE FAMILY

Sister Sledge

 We are family

I got all my siblings with me

We are family

Stand up everybody, sing

We are family

Stand up everybody, sing

Everyone can notice we’re together

As we go on by

And we flock just like birds of a feather

I won’t tell no lie

All of the people surrounding us they say

‘Can they be that close?

Just let me say for the record

We’re giving love in a family dose

We are family

I got all my siblings with me

We are family

Stand up everybody, sing

We are family

Stand up everybody, sing

Living life is amusing and we’ve just begun

To get our portion of this world’s delights

Great hopes we have for the future

And our aim’s in sight

No we don’t get disappointed

Here’s what we call our golden rule

Be self-confident and the things you do

You won’t go wrong, oh no

This is our family precious stone

--------------------------

ANSWER

We are family

I got all my sisters with me

We are family

Get up everybody and sing (X2)

Everyone can see we're together

As we walk on by

(And) and we fly just like birds of a feather

I won't tell no lie

all of the people around us they say

Can they be that close

Just let me state for the record

We're giving love in a family dose

(CHORUS)

Living life is fun and we've just begun

To get our share of this world's delights

(High) high hopes we have for the future

And our goal's in sight

no, we don't get depressed

Here's what we call our golden rule

Have faith in you and the things you do

You won't go wrong, oh no

This is our family jewel

We are family (hey, sing it to me)

(CHORUS)

SONG: LEMON TREE - OPEN QUESTIONS

THE -ING IN PROGRESSIVE VERB TENSES

This is my favourite song to practise and/or revise the structure and formation of progressive tenses at any level from A1 - B2. It is quite simple to understand for all levels and fun too, especially if you play the animation video. It is also a good song to mime the actions mentioned in the lyrics.
This is a higher level listening comprehension than the one below since students have to answer to open questions and write the answer as they listen. It is convenient to give them some extra time to complete the answers once they have listened to the song or you can always stop the song after each question if they find too hard.

LEMON TREE

FOOLS GARDEN

Listen to the song and answer the following questionS

1. Where is he sitting?

2. What’s the weather like?

3. What day of the week is it?

4. Does he have anything to do?

5. Why is he hanging around?

6. What’s he doing in his car?

7. Is he going slowly?

8. Is he going nearby?

9. What would he like to do?

10. How does he feel?

11. What did she tell him about yesterday?

12. What can he see?

13. Why is he taking a shower?

14. What’s inside his head?

15. Why does he go to bed?

16. What isn't good for him?

LEMON TREE Lyrics - FOOLS GARDEN

                    I'm ............... here in a boring room

It's just another rainy Sunday afternoon

I'm .................... my time, I got nothing to do

                  I'm ................. around, I'm waiting for you

But nothing ever happens -- and I wonder

I'm .................... around in my car

                  I'm ....................... too fast, I'm ..................... too far

I'd like to change my point of view

I feel so lonely, I'm ................... for you

But nothing ever happens, and I wonder

                  (Chorus)

I wonder how, I wonder why

Yesterday you .............. me 'bout the blue blue sky

And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree

I'm ................. my head up and down

                  I'm ..............., ............., ................, ..............., ................ around

And all that I can see is just another yellow

          lemon tree

sing! La, la da dee da, etc.

                  I'm .................... here, I miss the power

I'd like to go out ................... a shower

But there's a heavy cloud inside my head

I feel so tired, put myself into bed

Where nothing ever happens -- and I wonder

Isolation is not good for me

Isolation -- I don't want to sit on a lemon tree

I'm ..................... around in a desert of joy

Baby anyhow I'll get another toy

And everything will happen -- and you'll wonder
